Here is an overview of how we traversed through this magical land.
Day 1 : Land in Leh and Rest
We took a flight directly to Leh from Delhi but one can also drive to Leh from Manali or Srinagar. After landing in Leh following a long journey, it is very important that we should acclimatize. It is recommended to take 1-2 days rest. We took the afternoon off resting and sipping Ginger-Lemon teas. After a good rest since we felt good enough we ventured out into the local Leh market.
Day 2 : Leh – Shyam valley – Leh
We started the day with a visit to “Hall of Fame” museum which pays tribute to the armed forces and their scarifies. We then proceeded to Magnetic Hill, but didn’t find anything magnetic about it 😉 although there were people trying out experiments in the vicinity.
Sangam point is a beautiful confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. There is also a provision of rafting here, but it is not very well managed. In case you are planning on rafting, keep the entire day for it as it takes long time because of the mismanagement.
We then proceeded to Alchi monastery. This had beautiful hand paintings from long ago, carefully preserved. Photography was not permitted inside. On the way to Alchi we came across a beautiful Basgo monastery. There are good eateries around Alchi monastery.
For sunset we drove to Shanti stupa which provided golden sunset over the mountain ranges and spectacular views of the Leh city.
Day 3 : Leh – Nubra valley
We started early and travelled to Nubra valley via Khardungla, worlds highest motorable road. We took a number of enroute breaks for photography.
In the evening we drove to the scenic Hunder, where there were multiple activities one can engage in like quad bikes, double humped Mongolian camel rides and archery.
Day 4 : Drive to Turtuk -Thang
Today we visited the Diskit monastery. Here you will find a towering statue of Buddha and provides scenic views of the valley. We then took the journey along the Shyok river upto the last village on the Indo-Pak border at Thang. Enroute we came across the last airport at Thoise. The waters of Shyok river was looked like cement slurry because of the sand flowing into it. The landscape and the road are astounding. At thang village you will get to hear of the stories of how the village was overnight changed to India. You can also visit the border view point but the army camps atop the mountains are very difficult to spot and as such you cant see any border here.
Day 5 : Nubra to Pangong lake via Shyok
Drive to Pangong lake via Shyok. Enjoy the spectacular journey with amazing sceneries of snow clad Himalayas. Situated along India/China border, Pangong Lake is an utter delight to eyes with its various water colors seen at a stretch. Camp on the banks of the Pangong lake.
Day 6 : Pangong to Leh via Changla Pass
Drive back to Leh via The Changla Pass. On the way visit Thiskey Monastery, Rancho school and Shey Palace.
Day 7: Board the flight back home.
Trip Duration:
7 days and 6 nights
Stay options:
Leh : Sangto Villa
Beautiful property. Recommended!
Nubra: The Grand Nubra
Great views, but can check for alternatives
Pangong: Norling Camp
These tents are good but not recommended for Families as the temperatures drop very low from evenings. Prefer tents with heaters or go for Cottages/cabins
Best Season to visit:
July to Mid-September is the best season to visit post which it starts to snow and gets really cold.
Travel tips
- For flights to Leh, make sure to book a window seat for the spectacular view
- For travel in the times of Corona, RTPCR test is mandatory while travelling to Leh and travelling back to Maharashtra. (We had to take up the test twice)
- Start acclimatization tablets like Diamox in consultation with your doctor and slow travel.
- There is a lot of travelling involved, so be prepared for a hectic day.
- The local food like Thupka is not very easily available. You need to search for the options in local market or fort road.
- For lunch as we travel, the best roadside option for food is Maggie, which is easily available everywhere.
